The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (1)

There’s nothing quite like climbing into bed at the end of a long day and loving how your mattress feels like the perfect surface to sleep on.

The thing is, we all too often tolerate a surface that’s a bit too lumpy, soft, firm, hot, or cold rather than experience that nightly ‘Oh yeah, that feels good…’ moment as your body is supported in just the right way so you can relax and fall asleep.

The most dramatic option if you want to change the feel of your bed is to replace the entire mattress, which can be expensive and feel like a waste. Adding a mattress topper instead is a great alternative, and can work well whether you need to breathe life into an aging mattress or just feel like adjusting the surface of a newer one.

Every topper has a unique feel, depending on key factors like the material used, the firmness, how breathable it is, and your preferred sleeping position. So in this review, I’ll be discussing a range of mattress toppers to help you find the most appropriate one for your needs.

Here are the main sections to help you find what you’re interested in:

Which type of material to choose?

Here are the main benefits and downsides of the different materials to keep in mind when choosing a mattress topper:

Memory foam

  • Adds softness to a firm bed.
  • Excellent cushioning and support for your body.
  • Comfortable in all sleeping positions.
  • Good motion isolation.
  • The main downsides are heat retention, and the weight if you need to move it.

  • Most breathable material – ideal for hot sleepers.
  • Excellent cushioning for the body.
  • Good in all sleeping positions.
  • Can add softness or firmness.
  • Very durable.
  • The main downsides are the higher price, and that it won’t suit colder sleepers.

Synthetic (microfiber or hollow fiber)

  • Lowest cost usually.
  • Adds extra comfort and softness.
  • Feels warm, which will suit cold sleepers.
  • The main downsides are the need to shake it as it flattens, and heat retention.

  • Good temperature regulation in all seasons.
  • Adds softness.
  • Good for some allergies.
  • Better for back and front than side sleepers.
  • The main downsides are the higher price, and the need to periodically shake it.

  • Very soft to sleep on, with a light and fluffy feel.
  • Good insulation, so will suit people who sleep cold at night.
  • Good for any sleeping position
  • The main downsides are the need to shake it periodically, and concerns around animal welfare.

With those points in mind then, let’s take a look at the individual mattress toppers.

Overview of the mattress toppers

Sleep Innovations

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (2)

Price: $$ – $$$

The Sleep Innovations is my recommended mattress topper if you’re on a tighter budget and would like to increase the softness of your bed. There are two separate layers: two inches of plush fiberfill, and two inches of memory foam. They combine to provide a soft surface that still provides good support for your body. It feels snug and will add warmth to your bed, which cold sleepers will like. There’s also an ultra-soft version if you’d like as soft a bed as possible.

Plush Beds

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (3)

Price: $$$

The Plush Beds is my top choice for hot sleepers who prefer a cooler bed because of the high-quality breathable latex used. It’s very comfortable to sleep on and provides excellent cushioning for pressure points in the hips, back, and shoulders. It’s manufactured to a high standard, with eco-friendly certifications, and will last for many years. There are five firmness options, from soft to extra firm, so it will work well for side, back, or front sleepers of any weight.

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (4)

Price: $$$

The Layla is a very comfortable memory foam mattress topper, with copper-infused gel that improves breathability. It still feels warmer than latex, but doesn’t overheat as much as the more basic memory foam toppers. It molds well to your body, with a medium firmness that’s especially good for cushioning pressure points in any sleeping position. It has excellent motion isolation, so two people will disturb each other less when they change positions during the night.

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (5)

Price: $$$

The Saatva is a breathable latex mattress topper of medium firmness that has a wonderfully springy feel. It can work well for front, back, or side sleepers, and provides support for pressure points in any position. Like the Plushbeds, it’s manufactured to a high standard and will last the test of time. It is thinner though, so might not be right for heavier body weights. The cotton cover has a soft feel, and it has useful straps to keep it in place on the mattress.

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (6)

Price: $$

The Linenspa is a low-cost memory foam topper that’s simple in design, yet still effective in providing cushioning for the body. It’s medium firmness and will work for any sleeping position, molding well to your body and providing good pressure point relief. It’s available in a wider range of sizes than the other toppers, with nine mattress sizes to choose from. The memory foam will feel warm, which some people will like, but it’s not the best choice for hot sleepers.

Pure Green

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (7)

Price: $$$

A latex mattress topper that’s more budget friendly than the Plush Beds or Saatva. The Pure Green is made from organic latex imported from Sri Lanka and is also breathable to sleep on, which hot sleepers will appreciate. There’s a one, two, or three inch version, so you can make a subtle or more drastic change to the feel of the existing mattress. The one inch version is also considerably less expensive than the other latex toppers. It’s comfortable to sleep on and provides good support for the entire body.

Sleep & Beyond

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (8)

Price: $$$

The Sleep & Beyond is a wool mattress topper that provides a cozy surface to sleep on throughout the whole year. It doesn’t overheat in warm weather, while still feeling snug in the winter. It feels comfortable to lie on and will add softness to the mattress. It won’t mold to your body like memory foam or latex, and won’t provide as much pressure point relief either. But it will make a hard mattress feel more comfortable and will suit those who are sensitive to down or synthetic fibers.

Exceptional Sheets

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (9)

Price: $$

If you’d like a low-cost way to add some extra padding to your bed, the Exceptional Sheets might suit you. The boxed sections contain plush fiberfill that feels soft and cushions your body. The bamboo cover feels cool to touch and has a silky soft finish. It won’t match memory foam or latex when it comes to body support and cushioning, but it will still add softness to a bed and feel comfortable to lie on if you enjoy a soft surface. It will also add a little warmth, but not as much as memory foam.

The mattress toppers in detail

1. Sleep Innovations 4 inch dual layer memory foam topper

Two layers of memory foam and plush fiberfill combine to provide softness and cushioning for your body

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (10)

If you’d like to increase the softness of your bed with a mattress topper while still having good support for your body, the Sleep Innovations dual layer is one to consider.

It’s the best low cost memory foam mattress topper I’ve tried in recent times, so I decided to discuss it first for those who are shopping on a tighter budget.

What I particularly like about the Sleep Innovations is that it isn’t just one topper that’s four inches thick. Instead, it consists of two separate layers that were designed to work in unison.

The bottom layer consists of two inches of medium density memory foam that will support your body well, molding to your body shape and cushioning pressure points.

The top layer is also two inches thick, quilted and filled with plush fiberfill that’s neatly separated into boxed sections. This layer feels like a soft pillow and provides additional padding that you can sink into.

I found that the two layers combine to cushion your body really well. It perhaps won’t be right for people who prefer to sleep on a very firm surface. But if you need a softer surface to sleep comfortably, you’ll get that with this mattress topper.

The version I’ve described so far is the enhanced support, but there’s also an ultra-soft version. That one consists of three inches of memory foam and just one of the fiberfill, and feels even softer.

Here are the key points to consider:

  • The materials are CertiPUR-US certified.
  • You can experiment with using just the memory foam or fiberfill layer, or combine them for maximum effect.
  • The combined four inches is more than enough to completely change the feel of your current mattress.
  • It’s an effective way to soften the feel of a firm mattress.
  • The memory foam molds effectively to your body, providing good support for pressure points.
  • It has good motion isolation, so partners will disturb each other less when changing positions in their sleep.
  • The top cover also acts as a fitted sheet, stretching tightly over the foam section and mattress to keep both layers in place.
  • The top cover is machine washable.
  • The price is reasonable.
  • It comes with a long 10 year limited warranty.

My main criticism is the promise of gel cooling. It might be better than some memory foam mattress toppers in terms of heat retention, but you’ll still feel it’s a relatively warm surface to sleep on. Some people will appreciate that warmth, but if you’re a naturally hot sleeper, I’d recommend looking at the more breathable latex mattress toppers below.

That aside, the core idea of this topper is to soften your mattress and provide cushioning for the body, which it does well. The option to choose between different styles (memory foam, fiberfill, or both) means you can experiment with the layers to find what works best for you.

The main reason I’ve put it so high on the list is the balance between price and quality. All five sizes can usually be found for between $100 and $200, depending on the time of year.

Overall, even though it’s not as breathable as the latex toppers coming up next, it does its main job of adding extra cushioning to an existing mattress very well. So if your preference is for a softer surface to sink into at night, it’s a good choice for a reasonable price.

2. Plush Beds natural latex mattress topper

A 100% natural latex topper that supports the body well and is ideal for hot sleepers

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (11)

The Plush Beds latex mattress topper was the final topper I bought when I was living in New York, and it ended up being one of the most comfortable and breathable toppers I’ve ever slept on. New York summers are sweltering, so it was great to have a cooler surface to sleep on.

There are three main factors that stand out for me with the Plush Beds company and their latex mattress topper. Firstly, they have excellent production standards, with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Greenguard Gold certifications.

There are very few mattress companies that attain both of those. And it’s reflected in their ethos of producing their 100% natural latex mattress toppers in the United States rather than outsourcing to other countries, as well as being mindful of the materials they use.

Secondly, they have five firmness options, as well as two thickness choices – two inch and three inch. This allows more flexibility to find the right combination for your sleeping position, as well as your preference for a softer or firmer surface to sleep on.

I chose the three inch, medium firmness, as I’m quite heavy and wanted the extra inch to support my weight. I slept on it for nearly a year before I moved country, and was very happy with how well it supported my hips and shoulders. The cushioning the latex provides is excellent, and I liked how it allowed me to sleep comfortably on my back, side, or front.

Thirdly, the mattress topper is clearly manufactured to a high standard, with a robust feel that should last the test of time.

Here are some of the key details to consider:

  • It feels comfortable to sleep on in any position.
  • There are five firmness options: soft, med-soft, medium, med-firm, extra-firm.
  • They offer two thickness options: two inch and three inch.
  • It has excellent pressure point relief and cushions the body well.
  • It’s very breathable, especially compared to memory foam and other synthetic toppers.
  • It’s made to a high standard in the U.S. with certified 100% natural Talalay latex that’s sustainably farmed.
  • It’s robustly made – the company claims it should last up to 20 years.
  • It comes with a five year warranty.

The main downside is that it might be beyond some people’s budget. It ranges from around $250 for a medium firmness two-inch twin size up to $450 for the California King. However, latex provides good value for money in the long run because it’s so durable and doesn’t lose its form or flatten as quickly as other styles of mattress toppers.

Another downside is that there’s no trial period, and they don’t accept returns. For that reason, I would only buy a Plush Beds topper if you’re sure latex is right for you. If you’d like to try a latex mattress topper, but with an option to return it if it’s not what you hoped for, I’d recommend the Saatva (below) because of their 180 day trial period.

As for the craftsmanship of the mattress topper itself, I have no complaints at all as it provides excellent support for your body and I’ve had many nights’ good sleep on it.

Comparatively, memory foam toppers also offer great support for pressure points, but I personally prefer the springy feel of latex and find it cushions my body equally well, while feeling cooler to sleep on.

Overall, I was a fan of the Plush Beds latex mattress topper because of how breathable and comfortable it feels. You can use it to add softness or firmness to your existing mattress depending on the level of firmness you choose, and it won’t need replacing for many years.

3. Layla memory foam topper

A memory foam mattress topper that cushions the body well

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (12)

The Layla is my personal favorite of the many memory foam mattress toppers I’ve tried. Not only does it look stylish out of the box with the hexagonal patterned cover, but it goes a long way to giving you the fabled ‘sleeping on a cloud’ feeling.

It’s comfy, cozy, more breathable than standard memory foam, and provides superb support for pressure points. As a side sleeper, I found it allowed me to lie comfortably without too much pressure on my hips and shoulders, which is where I usually feel it.

On my back, it cushioned my body nicely and I never woke up with a sore lower back when sleeping on it. When lying on my front, I didn’t feel like I was sinking into it too much or creating an arch in my back as it molded nicely to my body rather than creating a dip.

The memory foam contains copper-infused gel, which is intended to make it more breathable. While I couldn’t tell you how much of a difference it makes related to the general design and type of foam used, what I can say is that it doesn’t overheat as much as basic, dense memory foam does.

It’s not as cool as a latex mattress topper, but it’s breathable enough to notice the difference if you’ve had memory foam in the past.

Here are the main points to consider:

  • 2″ thickness and 3.5 lbs density provides excellent cushioning for your body.
  • It feels soft and comfortable to lie on, whether on your back, front or side.
  • It comes encased in a soft and stylish cover that’s 66% polyester, 30% viscose, and 4% poly/lycra.
  • It has excellent motion isolation, so two people can sleep without disturbing one another.
  • It feels more breathable than standard memory foam.
  • The antimicrobial copper-infused gel helps reduce bacteria growth.
  • It’s well designed and manufactured, with a robust look and feel.
  • It’s available in six sizes, from twin to cal king.
  • Comes with a 120 night money back trial and five year warranty.

The main downside is that it’s probably not the best choice for people who like a firm surface to sleep on. So if that’s you, the soft-medium density of the Layla just won’t be firm enough.

And if you’re an especially hot sleeper or sleep in a very warm bedroom, memory foam might not be the best choice, no matter how comparatively breathable it is. I’d consider latex instead if you tend to feel too hot in bed.

As for the price, the Layla mattress topper is one of the more expensive memory foam toppers I’ll be covering in this article. They range from $200 to $400, depending on the size you need.

The copper-infused gel, cover, and high-quality materials used are what bumps the price up when compared to more basic memory foam brands.

If you’re on a tight budget, this might not be the one for you then. But if you do have a bit more to spend, and would like a high-quality memory foam topper that cushions your body well, the Layla is an excellent option.

4. Saatva latex mattress topper

A springy and breathable topper with a cotton cover that will suit hot sleepers

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (13)

The Saatva latex mattress topper was the first latex topper I bought when I moved to the United States. It had just the right balance of support and comfort, and it was still going strong after three years before I eventually made room to test other mattress toppers.

As a side sleeper, I need good support for my hips and shoulders in particular, which are usually the first to complain if a mattress or mattress topper is too firm. I’m also a perennially hot sleeper, so I was very impressed by how little heat retention this latex topper had compared to the memory foam toppers I’d tried.

If you’ve never slept on a latex topper before, it’s hard to describe the difference in how it feels compared to memory foam. For me, it’s the comfortable springiness that stands out. It conforms to the shape of your body like memory foam, but it feels like you’re cushioned rather than simply sinking in.

The fact that it’s only 1.5 inches thick and still managed to support my body well, absorbing a lot of pressure in the key areas where my weight needs extra support, says a lot.

Here are the key points to consider:

  • It feels comfortable and luxurious to sleep on.
  • The pressure point relief is superb, no matter which position you sleep in.
  • It’s breathable, especially compared to memory foam.
  • It’s encased in a breathable organic cotton cover that looks good and feels soft.
  • It’s made from natural latex.
  • The latex is durable and will last for many years.
  • It has corner straps to fit it to your existing mattress and keep it in place.
  • It’s made in the U.S. by a responsible company that supports its local community.
  • 180 day money back trial period and one year warranty.

The Saatva is an impressive mattress topper. It’s constructed and finished to a high standard with excellent materials and provides effective support for the entire length of your body.

Having said that, my main concern is that the 1.5 inches might not be quite enough thickness to support the heaviest of bodies. So if you are a bit heavier, I’d recommend trying the Plush Beds topper instead (above).

My other caveat is that it’s more expensive than some of the more budget-friendly toppers in this review. Having said that, I think the price is still reasonable for a latex topper, which do tend to be expensive.

As always, the price will depend on the size of your bed, with a range from $295 to $650. As a comparison, the queen is more expensive than the two inch Plush Beds topper, but less expensive than their three inch version.

Saatva has a generous 180 night home trial period, with a money back guarantee. This is one of the longest trial periods I’ve seen for mattress toppers.

On balance, if you’re looking for an upgrade to your bed, and a comfortable and breathable surface to sleep on, the Saatva is an excellent choice of latex mattress topper.

5. Linenspa gel infused memory foam

A reasonably priced memory foam mattress topper with good body support and cushioning

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (14)

The Linenspa gel-infused memory foam topper offers an opportunity to try out memory foam at a considerably lower price than some of the more luxury toppers.

With a choice of either two or three inches thickness (I would go with three inches if you need more body support), this is a topper that will cushion you, feel soft, and still provide support for your body.

That cushioning of the memory foam means you can drift off to sleep with less pain from pressure points. And if you have an old mattress that’s become uncomfortable, it will help hide lumpy parts and reduce the firmness a notch or two.

Here are the key points to consider:

  • It molds well to the shape of your body, both cushioning and supporting you.
  • It provides support for your back and joints to ease pain and pressure points.
  • The foam is CertiPUR-US certified for quality.
  • It’s available in two inches or three inches for maximum body support.
  • It comes in nine sizes, so there’s one for most bed sizes.
  • Affordable price for a memory foam topper.
  • It has a three year warranty.

For such a reasonable price, it’s hard to complain about the Linenspa mattress topper. All eight sizes of the three inch version cost between $60 and $120, which is significantly cheaper than some of the others in this article.

The main issue I have is that it does feel warm to sleep on, especially in the summer or if you’re a naturally hot sleeper. They have tried to mitigate the heat buildup with the inclusion of gel beads inside the memory foam and the open cell structure, but it will still feel warmer than a latex mattress topper. If you like sleeping on a warm surface, that won’t be an issue; if you’re a hot sleeper, it might be though.

Overall, if your desire is to add some extra cushioning to your mattress and have support for pressure points in areas like the hips and shoulders, you will get that with the Linenspa, and for a good price.

6. Pure Green latex mattress topper

If you’d like to try latex and are on a tighter budget

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (15)

Latex mattress toppers are notoriously pricey and the cost can increase significantly if it’s thicker, natural latex, and accompanied by a luxury cover. So the main reason I’m including the Pure Green is its reasonable price.

The three inch version is cheaper than other latex topper brands I’ve looked at recently. And you can choose a one or two inch version instead of the full three, which will bring the cost down even more. The two inch topper, for example, ranges from $155 to $265, depending on the size you need.

So this is an opportunity to try out latex without stretching your finances too far. It’s made by a company in Sri Lanka, which perhaps explains the lower price than some American-made toppers.

They have soft, medium, or firm versions, which gives you more choice. Personally, I like the medium version as I’m a side sleeper and it provided the right level of comfort for my hips and shoulders when on my side, though the soft would probably have been fine too. If you sleep mostly on your back, you might prefer the firmer style instead.

Here are some of the key details:

  • It’s made from 100% natural latex, with no synthetic materials.
  • It has good durability.
  • You’ll have a temperature neutral and breathable sleep surface. It won’t actively cool you, but it won’t feel as hot as memory foam either.
  • It’s available in all bed sizes.
  • You can choose one, two or three inch thickness.
  • There’s a soft, medium, or firm version, so you can combine thickness and firmness.
  • It feels very comfortable to sleep on. The soft and medium versions will support your body and make a hard mattress feel softer. The firm version will suit those who don’t like to sink into their bed so much.

If I had to nitpick, one criticism is that it doesn’t seem to be manufactured with quite the same precision as the Plush Beds or the Saatva. It looks slightly more basic, but really, once you’ve got covers on it’s not such an issue.

Another small issue is that it’s a little confusing working out which size to choose without clear guidance from the manufacturer. Personally, I think one inch is arguably too little unless you already have a comfortable mattress and just want a little extra support.

I think two inches will be right for most people, but three is perhaps better if you’re a very heavy person or have serious issues with pressure points. As for softness, I think that’s a purely personal preference. I’ve slept on the medium firmness two inch king size and found it worked really well, with my heavier body and tendency to sleep on my side.

7. Sleep & Beyond organic merino wool topper

A wool mattress topper that gets the right balance of comfort and temperature regulation

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (16)

If you’re not keen on synthetic materials such as memory foam or polyester, wool deserves a close look when selecting a mattress topper.

With an organic cotton jacquard encasement and filling of British Shropshire wool, the Sleep & Beyond mattress topper embodies both quality design and materials.

The result is a satisfying balance of luxurious feel, additional body support for your mattress, and good temperature regulation in both the summer and winter.

Here are the key points to note:

  • The inside fill is high-quality British Shropshire wool. The exterior encasement is 100% natural cotton percale, 270 thread count.
  • At 1.5 inches thick, it adds extra padding while allowing easy movement in bed.
  • It provides firm, yet comfortable support for your body.
  • Hypoallergenic and more resistant to mildew and dust mites than most topper materials.
  • Conveniently machine washable.
  • It’s durable and should last for many years.
  • The breathable materials will help keep your temperature at a comfortable level.

The main downside is that the topper is only 1.5 inches thick. So although it will add a little extra comfortable padding and support, it won’t fix a significantly lumpy mattress. And it might not be thick enough if you’re looking for as much soft padding as you can possibly squeeze into one topper.

A wool mattress topper of this size is a good choice if you need to add some extra body support and comfort without feeling like you can’t easily change positions as you’ve sunk into the surface too much. And unlike most memory foam toppers, it won’t sleep too hot in the warmer months of the year, yet will still feel cozy in the winter.

At just under $250 for a twin, it’s one of the most expensive twin sizes I’ve seen. However, the cost of the California king doesn’t rise relative to the twin when compared to some other brands, at around $330. So I’d perhaps skip this one for smaller bed sizes, but definitely consider it for a queen and up.

Overall, this is a carefully made topper with high-quality natural materials that will provide a comfortable and breathable layer of padding.

8. Exceptional Sheets bamboo mattress pad

A low-cost way to make your mattress feel softer

The 8 Most Comfortable Mattress Toppers In 2022 (17)

The natural bamboo topper by Exceptional Sheets is technically advertised as a pad rather than a topper. However, the terms pad and topper are often interchangeable, with the end result being what really matters.

The pad is particularly soft and comfortable, with a generous fill of revoloft fiber fill. This is sometimes used as a goose or duck down alternative, and while it doesn’t feel quite the same, it’s still very cozy to sleep on.

It won’t support your body in the same way that a memory foam or latex topper will, but it still does a pretty good job because of all the soft padding that you’ll sink into.

Here are the key features:

  • The inside of the pad is filled with Revoloft cluster fiber. It has the gentle feel of down, but without the feathers.
  • It has a silky bamboo blend cover, which makes it feel even softer under your sheets.
  • It’s a good alternative if you’re allergic to down, but enjoy that feel and softness.
  • It can be used on top of either a mattress or a firmer topper such as memory foam or latex.
  • It’s designed with individual boxes of fiber to keep an even shape.
  • It’s easy to clean and machine washable.
  • Low price compared to memory foam, latex or wool.
  • You get a 30 day return and one year exchange warranty.

One point to bear in mind is that if you need to hide large lumps or dips in your current mattress, you’ll need a thicker topper than this. It will probably disguise some minor signs of usage, but not if the mattress is in particularly bad shape.

The price is good, with most sizes usually available for under $100, depending on the time of the year and any holiday sales.

If your goal is to add an extra layer of softness and comfort, this is a good option to consider. It will definitely boost the softness of your current mattress and feel comfortable to lie on.

Just be aware that it’s not one to add lots of support for your body or pressure points, and might not suit heavier body sizes as much as some of the previous mattress toppers would.
